PowerTel's Electrical Transmission and Distribution history over the last forty years has enabled the Company to provide expertise to the Remote and First nations Communities.
PowerTel has developed a niche to deal with the logistics, access, and relationship building required to work in the Remote and First Nation Communities. The number of communities that have service because of PowerTel’s involvement is significant. PowerTel has been instrumental in the ability for so many of these locations to experience the privilege of having electricity power and run their communities.
The geography and weather of Ontario is severe. The knowledge and expertise of PowerTel and its people allows it to excel in this area. PowerTel has facilitated training of operators for diesel systems, apprenticeship training and advanced the development of First Nations LDC’s. Understanding the community needs, the risk of the location, co-ordination of activities and constant requirement to understand Mother Nature are necessary. Considerations of the First Nations groups and remote access are very serious undertakings. It requires exceptional communication and planning, proper execution of that plan and flexibility to work with ever changing conditions. It requires everything from travelling on ice roads, winter roads and by air, to managing accommodations, logistics of supplying materials and the production required when 24/7 operations have to occur.
PowerTel installed the Five Nations Energy Inc. Omushkego Ishkotayo 138 kV Transmission System Project in 130 days over two winters. PowerTel along with SNC Lavalin Inc. generated the designed to develop the plan of execution for the project. PowerTel’s expertise was brilliant in purchasing material, organizing and delivering the material and equipment and understanding the logistics required to deliver everything on time. All items had to travel to Cochrane by road or rail, then by rail to Moosonee and then to the site by Winter Road and Powerline Trails. The ability to organize and supervise such an undertaking in off-road remote locations is where PowerTel excels.
PowerTel’s Customer base of Remote and First Nations communities is lengthy. Some of the highlights are the system upgrades at Keewatin, North Spirit Lake, Fort Hope, Summer Beaver, Slate Falls, Peawanuck, Caribou Lake, Wunnumin, so many more.
